How Does an Addict Define Addiction?

As an addict I’ve often found the google response to this question very funny.  Sure, you can define it as “a compulsive, chronic, physiological or psychological need for a habit-forming substance, behaviour, or activity having harmful physical, psychological, or social effects and typically causing well-defined symptoms upon withdrawal or abstinence.” But what does that mean to the average joe.

Most addicts come to their own version of what addiction means to them.  For me, it’s when my life became completely unmanageable, and I became powerless.  Every addict’s ‘rock bottom’ is different, it’s when they put down the shovel and stopped digging their own grave.  If you ask an addict when they knew they were an addict, most of us would tell you that it was early on in our lives.  The speed at which our disease overwhelmed us is always different.  But the story always starts and stops the same.  Things went from “FUN” to “FUCKED” in a hurry.
