Addicts in Recovery: Dealing with Everyday Issues

Despite the innumerable benefits of being in recovery, it can still be challenging to maintain sobriety in the long-term. There are many issues that addicts run into while they’re trying to remain sober, and you may have some of these same obstacles as you work towards your goal of staying clean and sober for good. Here are some of the most common issues addicts in recovery face, so you can get an idea of what you might be up against.

Housing

Many people who are recovering from addiction find that they struggle to find safe, affordable housing. This is because many landlords refuse to rent to someone who has a history of substance abuse, or will do so only at higher rates. These difficulties can make it difficult for people in recovery to sustain themselves financially and maintain their sobriety.

Employment

It's important to have a supportive network of friends and family during recovery. It can be hard for addicts to find employment, since some employers may be hesitant to hire someone who has addiction problems or may not have the best work history. However, it is possible for addicts to achieve their goals through hard work and dedication.

Finances

One of the main issues that addicts run to is their finances. If you have a history of addiction, it is likely that your bank account has gone down in order to support it. So, when you are trying to get clean and sober, how do you make sure that your finances are up to par? The first step would be to sit down and create a budget for yourself. This will help you see where your money is going so that there's not an issue later on.

Family and Friends

Recovering addicts are never really recovered and have to deal with the constant temptation of using. Many addicts don't have a strong support system during recovery and this makes it difficult for them to get through their day-to-day life. The most important part of an addict's recovery is the people around them who love and care about them enough to want what's best for them.

Health

One of the most common issues that addicts run to is health. Addicts are more likely than others to have an addiction disorder, and a relapse can be detrimental to their health. This is compounded by the fact that people who are recovering often have a weakened immune system and will therefore be more prone to illnesses. If you're struggling with any physical ailments, it's important to get them taken care of as soon as possible so they don't worsen while you're trying to recover.
